The Earth House, designed by Architect Dharam Patel of Art & Architecture Associates, received the Winner recognition at the ACES of Space Awards 2023 held in Mumbai. The award celebrates excellence in architecture and design, recognizing projects that demonstrate innovation, sustainability, and thoughtful spatial planning. Located within the rural landscape near Halol, Vadodara, the project explores the potential of sustainable architecture rooted in traditional building techniques. The Earth House is designed as a near net-zero farmhouse that integrates natural materials, passive design strategies, and renewable energy systems to minimize its environmental impact. A defining feature of the house is its rammed earth construction, where soil excavated directly from the site is used to create thick earth walls with high thermal mass. These walls significantly reduce solar heat gain and help maintain interior temperatures 7–10°C cooler than the outside tropical climate, improving thermal comfort while reducing dependence on mechanical cooling. The layout is organized around three bedrooms and a central living area, separated by a leisure courtyard featuring a pool and gazebo. This arrangement enhances natural ventilation and strengthens the relationship between indoor spaces and the surrounding landscape. Sustainability extends beyond the building envelope. The project incorporates solar energy generation, rainwater harvesting, and landscape strategies such as native plantations, Miyawaki forest, organic farming, and mango orchards. These features support biodiversity while reducing water consumption and maintenance requirements. By combining traditional material knowledge with contemporary sustainable design principles, The Earth House demonstrates how architecture can respond to environmental challenges while maintaining comfort, simplicity, and a strong connection with nature. Winning the ACES of Space Awards 2023 highlights the project as an exemplary example of sustainable residential architecture from India, showcasing how thoughtful design can create environmentally responsible and context-sensitive homes.
