The Earth House, Vadodara – ET DesignScape Architecture Awards 2025 Winner
The Earth House, designed by Architect Dharam Patel of Art & Architecture Associates, received the Winner recognition at the ET DesignScape Architecture Awards 2025, marking the second time the project has been honored at the prestigious platform. Organized by The Economic Times, the DesignScape Awards recognize outstanding architectural projects that demonstrate innovation, sustainability, and design excellence.
Located in the rural landscape near Halol, Vadodara, The Earth House represents a thoughtful exploration of climate-responsive architecture and sustainable rural living. The project demonstrates how traditional building techniques such as rammed earth construction can be combined with contemporary design strategies to create environmentally responsible and energy-efficient homes.
Constructed using rammed earth walls formed from soil excavated directly from the site, the building envelope provides high thermal mass, helping maintain indoor temperatures approximately 7–10°C cooler than the outside environment. This significantly reduces the need for mechanical cooling while improving thermal comfort in the tropical climate of Gujarat.
The house is organized around three bedrooms and a central living space, separated by a leisure zone featuring a pool and gazebo. This spatial configuration encourages natural ventilation and creates a strong visual and physical connection with the surrounding agricultural landscape.
Sustainability strategies extend beyond the building envelope. The project integrates solar energy generation, rainwater harvesting, passive cooling techniques, and landscape strategies including native plantations, Miyawaki forest, organic farming, and mango orchards. These elements create a self-sustaining ecosystem while enhancing biodiversity and reducing environmental impact.
Receiving the ET DesignScape Architecture Awards 2025 for the second time highlights the project as a remarkable example of sustainable residential architecture in India, demonstrating how thoughtful design can harmoniously combine tradition, innovation, and environmental responsibility.
