The Earth House, Vadodara – Archello Awards 2025 Finalist
The Earth House, designed by Architect Dharam Patel of Art & Architecture Associates, was recognized as a Finalist at the Archello Awards 2025. The Archello Awards celebrate outstanding architectural projects worldwide, highlighting innovative designs that contribute to sustainable and responsible built environments.
Located in the agricultural landscape near Halol, Vadodara, The Earth House explores the potential of rammed earth construction and climate-responsive design to create a near net-zero farmhouse that blends harmoniously with its rural surroundings.
The project uses rammed earth walls constructed from soil excavated directly from the site, forming a thick building envelope with high thermal mass. This helps regulate indoor temperatures and keeps the interior 7–10°C cooler than the outside tropical climate, significantly reducing the need for mechanical cooling systems.
The house is planned with three bedrooms and a central living area, separated by a leisure courtyard with a pool and gazebo. This spatial organization promotes natural ventilation while strengthening the relationship between indoor spaces and the surrounding landscape.
Sustainability strategies include solar energy generation, rainwater harvesting, passive cooling techniques, and landscape integration with native plantations, Miyawaki forest, organic farming, and mango orchards. These strategies create a self-sustaining ecosystem while enhancing biodiversity and environmental performance.
Being selected as a Finalist at the Archello Awards 2025 highlights the project as an important example of sustainable residential architecture from India, demonstrating how traditional building knowledge and contemporary design can come together to create environmentally responsible homes.
