The Earth House, designed by Architect Dharam Patel of Art & Architecture Associates, received the Bronze Winner recognition at the IFI Design Awards 2024 held in New York. The global awards program celebrates design excellence and recognizes projects that demonstrate innovation, sustainability, and responsible design practices. Located in the agricultural landscape near Halol, Vadodara, The Earth House explores the potential of rammed earth construction combined with climate-responsive architecture to create a near net-zero rural residence. The project demonstrates how traditional building techniques can be reinterpreted through contemporary design to create sustainable living environments. The house is constructed using rammed earth walls made from soil excavated directly from the site, creating a thick building envelope with high thermal mass. This significantly reduces solar heat gain and helps maintain indoor temperatures 7–10°C cooler than the outside environment, ensuring thermal comfort in the tropical climate of Gujarat. The spatial layout is organized around three bedrooms and a central living area, separated by a leisure courtyard featuring a pool and gazebo. This planning enhances natural ventilation and establishes a strong relationship between indoor spaces and the surrounding landscape. Sustainability strategies include solar energy generation, rainwater harvesting, passive cooling techniques, and landscape integration with native plantations, Miyawaki forest, organic farming, and mango orchards. These measures create a self-sustaining environment that supports ecological balance while enhancing the quality of rural living. Receiving the IFI Design Awards 2024 Bronze Award highlights the project as a significant example of sustainable residential architecture from India, showcasing how architecture can harmoniously combine tradition, innovation, and environmental responsibility.
