ITC Mementos Ekaaya, Udaipur – GEEVEES Godrej Design Awards Winner – 2023

GEEVEES Godrej Design Awards – Winner
ITC Mementos Ekaaya, Udaipur
Located about 20 km from Udaipur, near the historic temple town of Eklingji, ITC Mementos Ekaaya is set within the dramatic undulating terrain of the Aravalli hills. The resort forms part of a larger development envisioned as a luxury timeshare community, where independent bungalows are thoughtfully placed across expansive landscaped plots. The architectural concept draws inspiration from children’s Lego blocks, translating the idea of modular assembly into architecture. Instead of repeating identical units, the design breaks the built form into smaller interchangeable modules, allowing each residence to be assembled in unique combinations. With nearly 60 different building blocks and more than 100 possible spatial modules, homeowners can customise their residences according to their lifestyle while maintaining an overall architectural coherence. Each bungalow is conceived as a self-contained retreat, incorporating private pools, jacuzzis, home theatres, libraries, and spa areas. High ceilings and pitched roofs rising up to 17 feet enhance spatial volume while improving thermal comfort. The modular system also enables flexibility in responding to the natural contours of the site, ensuring that every residence enjoys unique views of the surrounding landscape. Material selection was guided by local availability and environmental responsiveness. Locally quarried stone was used up to the plinth level, while fly ash bricks form the primary structure above. Eco-friendly insulated roofing eliminates the need for false ceilings and helps regulate indoor temperatures in the region’s harsh climate. Interior elements reflect regional craftsmanship, with furniture sourced from Jodhpur, rugs from Pushkar, and lighting designed through a combination of coves, pelmet strips, and integrated fan lighting. Outdoor planting was carefully chosen due to strong wind conditions on the site, with local bottle palms proving most resilient. Despite the modular system, no two homes are identical. Each plot was individually studied through detailed contour analysis, allowing buildings to be sensitively positioned within the terrain. This collaborative process between architect and homeowner results in a diverse yet harmonious community where every residence enjoys distinct spatial experiences and panoramic vistas of the Aravalli hills.
