The Earth House in Vadodara is a sustainable rural residence that explores the potential of natural materials and passive environmental strategies in contemporary architecture. Spread across approximately 3000 sq ft, the house accommodates three bedrooms, with its layout organized into two linear blocks separating the living areas from the private bedroom spaces. A leisure courtyard featuring a pool and gazebo forms the central transition between the two volumes, strengthening the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. Constructed primarily using rammed earth walls sourced from excavated site soil, the house celebrates the natural textures and colours of the earth. Subtle variations in tone were achieved by introducing charcoal and lime into the earth mixture, creating layered horizontal patterns across the façade. Gabion walls filled with locally available stones are used as sculptural screens, providing privacy while blending seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. The design incorporates both passive and active sustainable strategies. North-facing openings allow generous daylight while minimizing heat gain, and inclined fenestrations along the south facade promote natural cross ventilation. The roof uses 100 mm insulated PUF panels set at an optimal angle to support solar panels that generate approximately 10 kW of electricity. Combined with random rubble masonry foundations and deep overhangs that protect from sun and rain, the house demonstrates a thoughtful approach to environmentally responsive design.
