The Alpha Healing Centre, designed by Dharam Patel of Art & Architecture Associates, received international recognition through its nomination at the World Architecture Festival 2018, held in Amsterdam.
The World Architecture Festival (WAF) is regarded as one of the most prestigious global events in architecture, bringing together leading architects, designers, and studios from across the world. Each year, outstanding projects from different countries are shortlisted and presented before an international jury of renowned architects and critics. Being nominated at WAF places a project among the most noteworthy architectural works globally for that year.
Project Recognition
Alpha Healing Centre was recognized for its innovative approach to rehabilitation architecture, where the design moves away from the typical institutional atmosphere associated with medical facilities. Instead, the project creates a calm, resort-like environment that promotes emotional and psychological healing.
Located in the serene forests near Narukot and Jambughoda in Gujarat, the centre integrates architecture with nature to support the recovery journey of individuals undergoing treatment for addiction. The campus layout draws inspiration from the geometry of a flower, with buildings arranged like petals around a central core. This organic planning allows the architecture to respond sensitively to the site’s natural landscape while preserving existing trees and enhancing the therapeutic environment.
Architecture Supporting Healing
The project demonstrates how architecture can actively contribute to well-being. Open courtyards, shaded verandahs, landscaped gardens, and water bodies encourage a strong connection between the built environment and nature. Patient cottages, wellness facilities, and communal spaces are carefully planned to balance privacy with opportunities for social interaction and support.
Sustainable design strategies such as solar energy generation, rainwater harvesting, and organic farming further reinforce the centre’s philosophy of holistic wellness and environmental responsibility.
Global Recognition for Indian Architecture
The nomination of Alpha Healing Centre at the World Architecture Festival highlights the growing presence of Indian architecture on international platforms. The project represents a thoughtful integration of design innovation, sustainability, and human-centered architecture, demonstrating how built environments can positively influence healing and recovery.
This recognition not only celebrates the design excellence of the project but also reinforces the commitment of Art & Architecture Associates to create architecture that is meaningful, responsible, and deeply connected to its context.
